Mexteca

Salsa/Latin

With their outsize sombreros, flamboyant neck scarves and silver-buttoned riding breeches – Mariachi bands are to Mexico what oompah bands are to Bavaria. Just a few notes from the guitarron (acoustic bass guitar) or the Tijuana-brass-style trumpet, are enough to evoke a Mask of Zorro world of hot jalapeno peppers, fiestas, arcaded squares and sultry senoritas.

Led by Salvador Jimenez Hernandez who hails from Guadalajara, London-based Mexteca are a thoroughly authentic Mariachi band who have performed at festivals, weddings, receptions and parties of all kinds. Their higher profile assignments have included film premiere parties, award ceremonies and charity galas where guests have included Mick Jagger, Hugh Grant, Leonardo Dicaprio, John Malcovich, Dustin Hoffman, Elton John, Sting and members of the Royal family.

The band’s usual line-up is a four-piece consisting of trumpet, accordion, guitarron and vihuela (small guitar), but they can also add a trumpet, violin and guitar for a bigger sound, or slim down to a trio or even a duo where space or budget dictates. In addition, all the band members sing. Their normal playing time is an hour-and-a-half over a three hour stay. A great advantage of this band is that it is completely acoustic and mobile, enabling the musicians to serenade between tables and play outside – weather permitting.
